What We Do
The Y Southland has a vision of strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.
Every day we seek to ignite potential and empower greatness.
We do this across a range of service areas – from the gym to the classroom, and beyond.
The Y is about community. With inclusivity at heart, our wide range of services and facilities ensure the Y is a place for everyone.
Our service areas include
Youth Services, Mentoring, and Programmes
Our youth services team provided one-on-one mentoring support services for young people as they navigate life’s challenges. With a focus on ensuring young people have an opportunity to be heard and to connect with their community, we also run a range of youth development and leadership programmes.
Gym
Our 24/7 Fitness Centre is not for profit, which means any profit generated goes back into the Southland community via Y services, facilities, and programmes. We have group fitness classes, a sauna, quality equipment, friendly staff, and a genuine community feel.
Education
We offer traditional qualifications in non-traditional ways, with an inclusive approach to learning. We offer the New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills Level 1 – a free 20-week course for 16-24-year-olds, with opportunities for NCEA qualifications.
Omaui
The Y owns and operates the outdoor camp at Omaui; a special spot for schools and groups – just 30 minutes’ from Invercargill. With adventure-based learning activities onsite, and room for 45 people to stay overnight, it’s a fantastic spot for any school or group.
Recreation
We have a full climbing and bouldering wall at the Y’s 77 Tay Street premises, as well as a full indoor basketball court which is currently being modernised.
