But why should you learn with the Y? Here are just five good reasons (there are so many more,  but here’s a starting point!):

  1. We care about you and your preferred learning style

      One of the great things about education at the Y is that you can be yourself and learn your own way. We know that not everyone learns the same, so we try our best to approach our teaching with an inclusive lens and try to cater to all learning styles. Do you learn best by doing? We’ll ensure we incorporate a whole heap of practical opportunities for you get your hands dirty and learn through doing. More of a visual learner? We’ll look for resources that support that. Our teaching team get to know you and how you learn best, so they can teach you in the best way!

      2. We strengthen your mind and your body

        At the Y we are huge advocates for the massive benefits physical activity has on each and every single person. We’re lucky enough to have our classrooms based right above our gym, and have a huge indoor court onsite too, so there are plenty of opportunities to activate both your body and mind. All learners at the Y Southland get a free gym membership, and fitness training is incorporated into our pastoral care. Strong body, strong mind, strong future – let’s get it!

        3. You can achieve NCEA
        We know when it comes to moving into tertiary study or employment, NCEA can be a huge help. But we also know it can be tough to achieve NCEA in an environment that just isn’t right for you. Here at the Y you can get NCEA credits alongside your NZ Certificate in Foundation Skills qualifications, all in an inclusive environment.

        4. We can connect you with awesome employment opportunities

        Part of learning about the Y is about learning what sort of employment opportunities are out there and how you might go about getting into them. We take on board your interests then plan workplace visits, so you can get a first-hand look at different jobs that might peak your interest, and get an idea of what life after the Y might look like for you.  We aim to get you work ready – and that includes setting standards for behaviour. The opportunity to visit a whole range or workplaces can open your eyes to a whole new future – exciting! 

        5. We have our own pathways

        We started the year offering the NZ Certificate in Foundation Skills Level 1, and now we’re about to launch the NZ Certificate in Foundation Skills Level 2; providing a clear pathway for you as you continue your learning journey. Both courses are run with a module-based approach, so you can enrol at any time and progress through the courses. Level 1 offers a true foundation, and is a great place to become more self aware while learning key literacy and numeracy skills, while Level 2 focuses on your future, and giving you fundamental skills and tools to ensure you’ll succeed.
