NZ Certificate in Foundation Skills Level 1 & Level 2

A free and fun pathway to NCEA, designed to be inclusive and empowering.

School not working out?

Want to gain NCEA qualifications and get ready for further study or employment?

We’ve got you.

The Y Southland offers free programmes to support you to get what you need for a strong future. A pathway to NCEA in a non-school environment, plus real world skills and capabilities to set you up for whatever might be next.

We offer two free 20 week programmes – the NZ Certificate in Foundation Skills Level 1 and the NZ Certificate in Foundation Skills Level 2. We also offer Intensive Literacy and Numeracy tutoring.

Our programmes

  • offer free and inclusive learning and pathways to NCEA Levels 1 and 2
  • are based at the Y Southland (77 Tay St, Invercargill), and include a free Y gym membership while enrolled
  • are available to learners aged between 16 and 24 years (or 15 with an exemption certificate)
  • have rolling intakes throughout the year
  • include pastoral care, as and when you need it

We aim to provide individualised learning support in a group environment, because we know not everyone learns the same. We want you to bring your full selves to class every day and try to create a fun and inclusive environment for you to thrive.

NZ Certificate in Foundation Skills Level 1

This is the ideal place to start if you’re finding school isn’t for you, but you want to get NCEA Level 1 or 2 qualifications and get set up for future study or employment. This free 20 week programme has a focus on learning through wellbeing, so you’ll not only work towards a qualification, but you’ll gain important skills to set you up for a positive future.

Further benefits of education at the Y include the availability of pastoral support from our youth workers – if and when needed – and a free Y gym membership while you are enrolled.
