From wobbly to wow: try the Y’s balance-boosting classes!

With Y Southland Gym Instructor and Personal Trainer Diana de Lima

Lately, I’ve had a few people approach me asking for exercises to improve their balance and stability.

While there are plenty of exercises that support this, what I’d like to highlight is how our group fitness classes support balance and stability.

In particular, our Y Fusion Class. This class focuses on mindful movement such as pilates, yoga, and tai chi, which are effective ways to enhance balance through increased body awareness and control.

Y Fusion incorporates Pilates techniques, which focus on slow, intentional movement, which can be ideal for those looking to build balance and stability.

Additionally, improving core and leg strength is vital for balance, which can be effectively targeted through our Y HIIT and Muscle Fit classes. According to Dr. Dy, “a strong core is essential for balance since the core muscles provide stability and support for the entire body.”

Exercises like planks, bridges, and abdominal curls can enhance dynamic balance by strengthening core stability and body control.

Give the wobble board or balance board a go, grab a swiss ball and try a few balance exercises, practice sit to stand – weighted or unweighted, one leg or two, and/or try Bulgarian split squats, normal squats and lunges.

These are just a few tips, but this week I really recommend you have a go at one or more of our group fitness classes!
