Leadership Days

Outdoor and adventure-based learning to support young leaders of tomorrow

The Y offers free leadership days to schools, aiming to give young people the skills they need to be leaders of the future.

Leadership Days

The Y hosts up to 12 leadership days each year at our outdoor camp at Omaui. These are free for schools, groups, agencies or organisations but require bookings in advance. For a fee, we can also hold day programmes at our Tay Street base, incorporating our indoor climbing wall.

Leadership days will focus on

  • adventure-based learning
  • outdoor experiences
  • teamwork
  • confidence
  • communication
  • leadership

and will encourage young people to step out of their comfort zone and try new activities and experiences.

Programmes are delivered by outdoor-qualified staff and supported by the Y’s youth services team.

Why adventure-based learning works

Adventure-based learning encourages and supports young people to get out of their comfort zones, and to gain practical skills in teamwork, leadership and communication. It also inspires confidence – giving young people the opportunity to experience unique challenges to face and overcome.

It’s all completed in a supportive, engaging environment, where everyone is supported to have a go.

Previous programme participants said the skills they learned could help them in a range of ways in their daily lives:

It will help me be a better person in life.

Things such as outdoor education at school and also school camps, I feel much more confident and can share the skills I have learned with the juniors in the future.

The team work could help with my confidence with people I’m unfamiliar with.
