Climbing and bouldering
Reach new heights at the Y!
IMPORTANT: The Y Southland’s climbing and bouldering wall is closed until Monday 3rd February while we undertake some maintenance. Thank you for your understanding!
The Y has its own climbing and bouldering wall at 77 Tay Street.
Access to the wall is included in your Y membership, with certain terms and conditions.
If you have your Y-approved belay licence you can use the facility any time during our staffed hours. If not, access to our open climbing nights is available to any member. For non-members, fees will apply ($13 per casual visit), or $7.50 for Southland Alpine Club members).
Open climbing nights

(term time only and excluding public holidays)
Open climbing nights are for all levels of climbing experience – from the beginner to the expert. Our climbing instructors are there to help out.
Kids Climb

Kids Climb is an awesome one hour session for children/young people and their parent/caregiver to enjoy climbing in a safe, supportive environment. It’s designed to give children aged under 16 years the chance to have a go at climbing. Any child under 14 years must be accompanied by an adult.
Belay licences
You can get your Y-approved belay licence, which will allow you to use the climbing wall at any time during staffed hours. Have a chat to our instructor to get started during open climbing nights.
Bookings
The Y’s climbing and bouldering area can be hired out for group/team building sessions, schools, community groups/organisations or birthdays and we can provide an instructor. Get in touch to find out more – email reception@ymcasouth.org.nz or come and see us.
