So, what does the Y do in Southland?

So, what does the Y do in Southland?

The Y has been in Invercargill for close to 150 years, and our mahi has changed over that time.

And to be fair, it can be hard to summarise all that we do here at the Y Southland.

That’s why we’ve launched a new mission statement to try to summarise it.

Our vision, alongside other Y associations within New Zealand, is for strong kids, strong families, strong communities.

Our mission statement (newly established) is Ignite Potential, Empower Greatness.

When we got to thinking about our broad range of service areas, we worked out that what each and every one of our staff do, day in day out, is to ignite the potential and empower the greatness in everyone who comes into the Y.

We do this through our non-profit health and fitness centre, where our team are constantly seeking to support people to smash their health and fitness goals.

We do this through our education programmes. The NZ Certificate in Foundation Skills Level 1 is a programme that ignites potential and empowers learners to take ownership of their learning and their lives.

We do this through our mahi in youth services. Our youth workers mentor young people who are trying to navigate life’s challenges, uncovering their strengths and supporting them to be the very best version of themselves. Our free youth development programmes connect young people with opportunities in their community and give them the confidence and skills to try new things and meet new people. Our free youth leadership initiatives ignite the potential of tomorrow’s leaders, getting them out of their comfort zone and building skills to stay with them for life.

Our out of school care and holiday programmes seek to have something for every child – sparking their interests and giving them new and exciting opportunities and adventures.

We do it through our climbing and bouldering facility and programmes, where people reach  new heights each and every day.

We do it through the operation of Omaui Camp, giving people the opportunity to connect with the outdoors and create memories and connection with nature.

Ignite potential. Empower greatness.

We think that about sums it up!
