Tracks, ponds and more at Omaui

Tracks, ponds and more at Omaui

With a very big thank you to the Rotary Club of Invercargill, some serious mahi is underway at Omaui Camp!

A massive area has been cleared as we work to establish a fantastic space, ideal for learning opportunities.

Work has started in earnest, as we set about laying approximately 300m of walking track, reinstating the pond to allow for environmental education on site, and planting hundreds of native trees. Four wooden walkways are going in, which are being built by the Invercargill MenzShed. This work is all supported by Rotary, whose volunteers have already put in hours of voluntary mahi alongside Y staff.

ICC Parks and Reserves have also donated hundreds of plants, with more to come in early May.

The space will be ripe for amazing environmental education programmes. With thanks to the Les Hutchins Conservation Foundation, work is also underway to develop environmental education programmes that schools can use onsite. Lloyd Esler is developing these as we speak and we can’t wait to test them out with schools.

It’s all part of ensuring the future of Omaui Camp is a strong one, and that it provides for not only fantastic outdoor learning experiences (three are more than a dozen awesome team-building activities onsite, including a flying fox), but that it can be a base for educating youngsters about the environment.
